Picnic

2005 Family Picnic offered plenty of food as always and
a great time for everybody (photo by

This
year's family picnic was a great success. The picnic was
held behind the Post Home on Sunday, August 21st. As
always, there was plenty of food for everyone. The menu
included hamburgers, hotdogs, grilled chicken, ribs, endless
salads and beverages, and of course deserts.

American Legion Post 177 celebrated
its 60th Anniversary with special guests and many
activities including the dedication of our new sign
out front.

Wilson, 1st Vice; Jerry Whipple, Sergeant-At-Arms;
Michael Wheeler, Adjutant; Dean Strong, Chaplain; and
Tom DeShazo, Executive Committee. |
| There
was plenty of fun for everyone. The City of
Fairfax Fire Department was on hand to demonstrate the
"Jaws-of-Life" donated to them by the
Post. The Fairfax Rifles, a Civil War re-enactment
group demonstrated battlefield tactics with live-fire
from their period muskets. The kids were treated
to pony rides, a moon bounce, and a colored leaf hunt. |

The
Family Picnic is an ideal opportunity to honor the
hard-working volunteers that make such a difference to
Post 177. These individuals serve the Post
selflessly throughout the year without asking anything
in return. Although there are numerous volunteers that
deserve recognition, only one can receive the
distinction of "Legionnaire of the Year" and
only one Auxiliary member can be honored as "Lady
of the Year".

The Family Picnic
couldn't happen without the dedication of many
volunteers. Leman Young, our oldest member
still jumps in and helps out anywhere he can with
the same spirit that helped build American Legion
Post 177 sixty years ago. |
